DVD Beaver has an initial report that this film will be part of the second Lon Chaney set from WHV:

I guess it will be released some time in early 2008.

ARE YOU SERIOUS????

This is one of my all time favorite silent films. It was one of the first I saw when I was a kid and never forgot it, it impressed me. I didn't know that it was considered an art film and so well respected by the critics back in the 20's I just thought the images were amazing, never forgot the clown spinning the ball!

Thanks for the note about its possible DVD release will be looking forward to it.

I also love this film. Anything directed by Victor Sjostrom is worth watching.

re: the clown spinning the ball (which is the world). Compare with the merry-go-round (which is the world) being spun by a giant in Merry-Go-Round (directed von Stroheim / Julian) from 1923, the year before He Who Gets Slapped. It functions as a visual refrain in Merry-Go-Round exactly as it does in He Who Gets Slapped. Possible influence.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

For other connections, consider the role of animals as agents of justice in both films.

I just followed your link. It said..."Lon Chaney Collection Volume 2 (The Unholy Three/The Unholy Three/Tell It to the Marines/He Who Gets Slapped/Tod Browning doc.)"

WOW! I've been looking for some of these titles for years.

I saw HE WHO GETS SLAPPED at a Film Forum Lon Chaney revival in the early 90s. I was completely blown away by it. Unholy Three (talkie) was great too! The silent Unholy Three and Tell it too the Marines looked great in the Chaney Doc on the last TCM compilation. AND A TOD BROWNING DOCUMENTARY!!!!

WOW part 2!

Now where is WEST OF ZANZIBAR! which was equally stunning?

reply

They need to release a thrid set with WEST OF ZANZIBAR, MOCKERY, and MR. WU. Enough said

I think it may be 2009 now before we see the second Lon Chaney box set from Warner.

Yeah, I hate those provisional dates...

This title is finally available as a "burned on order" DVD-R from Warner Home Archives. Alas, no shipping outside of America, but at least it's finally out.

1,000 mini-bios and I feel like I'm just getting started

I'm so lucky because my local library stocks a lot of these DVD-Rs, which would take a serious slap out of my wallet if I were to buy them individually.

This is a beautifully photographed, well-acted and entertaining talkie with a good mix of sorrow, humor and suspense. 8/10 stars from me.
