The MGM lion used here.

When I see this movie, I like seeing the MGM lion, it isn't shown "roaring", just looking around rather puzzled as to where to look. I wonder if this was meant to be the original leo the lion opening for MGM. Other silent films open with the roaring lion (of course you can't hear it). That roaring lion is used all through the MGM movies up to the early 40's I'm assuming the roar was dubbed and re-recorded as the years passed, if you compare the lion's roar on titles like Grand Hotel and the roar under the opening music in THE WIZARD OF OZ.

This, I believe, was Slats, the original Goldwyn Lion who was used from 1916-1924. The first lion to actually roar before an MGM film was Jackie (1928-1956).

Wasn't this the first film to use the lion? That's what the box says on the DVD-R release. The lion looks more cute than threatening, and it's sort of a random image of him looking back and forth. Clearly it was the blueprint of more to come.

The lion was used years before for Goldwyn films.
