New DVD Version

Warner Brothers have released a new dvd version of this film in a double feature with the 1933 remake. Seems like it might be a decent restoration, at least compared to the other options available:

Worth checking out for this somewhat post-Griffith Lillian Gish film. I'll report back whenever I a get around to viewing it.

I watched it this evening. It is sensational. At last it has been given the musical score which this fine movie deserves.

The restored version brings out elements of the story which I hadn't previously noticed and the acting is first rate from both Gish and Colman and from the supporting cast. It is underplayed rather than the opposite. For the first time I understood the psychology behind Gish's agonised decision not to return to her lover. A movie masterpiece.

I just saw this on TCM this morning. Though I was disappointed in the ending, I did appreciate the acting skill of the leads - and I noticed ths score right away. Absolutely beautiful, haunting, evocative music. IMO, it's worth watching for the way the score enhances every scene.

This is on TCM now. I looked up the 1933 remake and had no idea this was also filmed in 1915. What I don't understand is why

the later versions changed the ending. In the 1915 version a sympathetic Monseigneur obtains a special dispensation from the pope for Angela to leave the sisterhood. The lovers are reunited to live happily ever after.
