Anyone else see this on TCM?

I did. I loved it! I thought it was funny, and the music score was great too! I give this a 10/10.:D

I have a rainbow of thoughts!

It was just wonderful! Witty, good acting, and cool ending—pretty exciting! Surprisingly I thought the score was lovely and really worked nicely with the film. I hope it will be on DVD in the near future (and if anyone is listening :Bombshell needs to be on DVD also!)

I recorded it and watched about 3/4 of it this morning. It's fun, and I love old Hollywood. The bungalows of Los Angeles were probably a steal back then!

DH and I watched it last night and thought it was great! I especially loved all the jabs at the film industry. People who enjoyed that aspect of Tropic Thunder might like to watch this one and compare the two...many things have not changed. :)

I watched it tonight for the 2nd time.A wonderful intact early silent, that takes an interesting look at early Hollywood.I love silents as they relax me and take me back in time.

Hi kerrydragon,

As someone born in raised in Los Angeles, I found this film fascinating. The scene in the old Hollywood Hotel, the Silverlake bungalows most of which are still standing, the interruption of the shooting of Greed and watching a frustrated Charlie Chaplin shoot a silent were all fascinating. Fans of Greed should note that the studio which later became MGM was owned by Sam Goldwyn at the time and it was Goldwyn who greenlighted the film. I also noted the musicians on set playing as the actors worked. The print was not in the best of shape but I still loved it.

Yes, yes, and I loved it!! I especially loved the end where Mem chooses the director instead of the "obvious" choice. I loved it and haven't stopped thinking about it since I watched it.

I do wish TCM wouldn't so late on Sunday to show the silents, however.

I DVRed it a while ago and watched it today. Loved it! Fun to watch, great story, cool plot twists, and a cameo from Charles Chaplin. What a wonderful film.

La Marr had a pretty small part, but she still had a certain sparkle, I think. What did you think of her?

reply

La Marr is the whole reason I wanted to see this film and keep it on my dvr. She was fabulous!

Sometimes silent films are more interesting historically than as entertainment (I'm looking at you, Fatty Arbuckle), but this one really captured my attention early on. And that's even though I found Mem to be kind of a drip (like, why was she falling to pieces every time someone asked her to do the simplest thing? Take a Xanax, Mem!). It was also as close to quippy or snarky as I've seen a silent film get -- it has a satirical attitude even without dialogue. Very fun.
