Probably about twice as long as it needs to be

I noticed many of the scenes in this film carried on much longer than necessary. For instance, I found myself thinking, "Do we really need to see him stare at the ceiling for 30 seconds? About 10 seconds would have conveyed the idea." I think Gance would have benefitted from an editor. Nonetheless a beautiful film.

There comes a point where you just want a film to finish.
Four and a half hours is far too indulgent.
This film had magnificent moments - but seriously, sometimes less is more.
Literally at least 90 minutes being cut, would improve the film greatly.

I'm glad I watched it - but I doubt I'll ever do so again.

I tape long movies like this one and see them later in intervals,of 2 hrs or less at a time. Not the most pleasant movie, but the imagery and early film techniques are a must to see and quite moving, especially the last hour and a half.Noticed a tinted scene as well.

I've seen this film before and as much as I enjoy it honestly I was thinking the same thing last night while watching it again. I can only imagine what the original version was like at 7 or 9 hours long. (lol) Like 'kerrydragon' I am fascinated with the imagery and early film techniques.
