Not the best... But my favorite Bustr Keaton movie

This movie doesn't have the greatest story but the gags make me fall down laughing. Even the little things like the two old men on top of every train car that almost fall off when the train goes up little bumps. When he gets nailed from behind by the woman he was trying to defend. Can't help but root for Buster Keaton. Right after this I also enjoyed College which is another Funny one with BK

I am always surprised when people laud The General and say that Our Hospitality and Steamboat are "slow" or not very good, when they are my two favourites at the moment.

Not knocking The General, but I thought Hospitality and Steamboat had good characters, a bit more developed than 2D, good storylines with not too many set pieces just thrown in. Sherlock for instance is wonderful, but it's more a game than story in places. I would put Steamboat above Sherlock for the hat scene alone : )

What is wrong with the story? And the direction? There are absolutely gorgeous shots in this film and they never call attention to themselves. This has to be the most underrated Keaton.

I agree. I love all of Buster's work, but I think "Our Hospitality" is my favourite. It has some amazing and dangerous stunts, and Buster seemed to be having a good time. Brilliant movie.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying.

I agree...I can see The General as a masterful film, the pinnacle of Keaton's career, but Our Hospitality has a lovely charm to it and the recreation of the time period is one only a true craftsman could've come up with...the train sequence is a film all on it's own, I put it right up there with Welles's opening montage and sleigh sequence from Magnificent Ambersons.
..and it's a funny movie to boot!!

So I should check out The General next?

This was the first(and only) of BK's work I've seen.

Yes, you should.

I just watched this movie again, I think it's the third time now. It's easily one of the sweetest comedies I've ever seen; this despite the rather ugly plot! It's executed with such charm, wit and elegance that although some scenes almost take my breath away in amazement, the feel-good atmosphere remains intact throughout to me. The humor is very sublte and it may need repeated viewings to fully notice all the inventiveness involved.

It's fascinating to see the 1830's being gently ridiculed from a 1923-perspective, with the primitive train and the unforgettale line "This is turning into a very dangerous street!" Let's say that the world's still going strong some more centuries, and imagine a movie of 3005 poking fun at the primitive times of 2008. I wonder how that'd turn out. As I'm just 19 maaaybe I'll get to know, although probably not.

Very nice of you! I checked it out per your rec. Thanks!

A modern take, like Tati and Keaton in one!

Certain parts of 'Our Hospitality' are well - timed, an example being when the Canfields search for Willie. Willie is using the Umbrella and water comes rushing down to hide him from the Canfield's view. I felt it was both funny and well timed by everyone involved.
