I watched this great comedy last night for the very first time in my life, and couldn't believe how good and hilarious it was! I first had doubts to buy it, since the movie barely runs over one hour and the Kino DVD cost me nearly $20 (not to mention the shipment to South America), but soon I realized it worths every single penny I paid for it.

This was my very first Mabel Normand movie ever, and now I can finally tell why she was so popular and her name remains relatively well known and is still often mentioned as essential in movie history. She was very funny and talented, a true pioneer, and her fame, more than deserved.

Agreed! A great movie! It really had me going, from her romance all the way to Hollywood, the lion, and the crook.

It's funny but I'm always surprised when these beloved stars from nearly 100 years ago turn out to be absolutely mesmerizing, and their films are fascinating. But it should not be a surprise at all! That's exactly why they are still famous--they were THAT good!

I also loved this so much. I watched it last night on TCM, and although it was late, and I can't say I am very fond of silent movies, but while watching this I almost forgot it had no sound. The action, cinematography, editing are so perfect, it's almost hard to believe that this was done almost 100 years ago. The lion scene was hilarious. So was the action of taking back the lost money. It was not a real comedy, as the main theme is almost sad, but I laughed much more than in those slap stick comedies.

I didn't find it all that funny,I actually felt sorry for the position the Lion was in.Then there was sorta of a downbeat feel to the movie with themes of struggling to make it,separation from family, and being fleeced. The last segment was interesting, except the black gent, should of got a big tip.Nice ending, though.
