And what a pleasant surprise it was. I didn't think they would have as much footage as they do. Still, about an hour or so is missing. You only get a hint at the film's sumptuous design in sets and costumes. Other stills show more scenes set in India with Valentino made up elaborately. His performance here is excellent by measure of what exists. His role requires a great deal of complexity and depth. And Valentino handles it well. He's much better than in the earlier Beyond the Rocks, in which all he had to work with was his own star presence. He was a much better actor than history has credited him with. That he could act (in addition to timeless star power) is part of the reason for his continued popularity.
