Some News

@All

There will probably be three versions of "beyond the Rocks".

1. A Dutch version. English intertitles with Dutch subtitles.
This version will be presented during the Filmmuseum’s Biennale (5th – 10th of April 2005).
Weblink: http://www.filmmuseum.nl . See link Biennale 2005, English version.
On the 5hth “Beyond the Rocks” will be shown in a special gala presentation in the Tuschinski theatre in Amsterdam. So we’ll have to get out our tuxedo’s over here in Amsterdam.
By the way the Biennale is a project of the Filmmuseum and not of Amsterdam as a city.

2. An English soundversion. Might be shown in Cannes. So no distribution will take place before that festival.

3. A silent version running at 18 fps. Could be presented if everything works out fine in Bologna during “Il Cinema Ritrovato” in July of this year.

Just saw the trailer of the movie. It is rather short one. It starts with a tender scene between Swanson and Valentino and a little flower. Then the mood changes as we see part of an encampment where bedouins rush to and fro. Menacing figures on horseback appear on the top of sanddunes. People, natives and whites try to scurry to safety in the encampment. Much more horse riders descend from the dunes.

But help is on the way. A shot shows soldiers, most probably French. They rush towards the beleagered party. Last shot inside the encampment where they shoot desparetly at the enemy.

The trailer is a sound version [of course, 8-))] Henny Vrienten's music is very powerful, I mean loud, and projectionist and ushers chould check the soundlevel! In this trailer he not only use music but in it are mixed sounds of cries and gun shots. This does not work for me as I think that music offers far more possibilities to enhance the images. However the general present day public might appreciate it nevertheless.

Positively wierd to me is the trumpetter who plays the attack signal of the American cavalry. For a moment you think that you are in a John Ford movie and expect John Wayne to appear. But then again I am a silent movie buff totally spoilt by the good music our piano players overhere in the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam perform.

The trailer ends abruptly with only the sounds of wind in the desert and a whiniing horse.

I don't intend to make somebody envious, but the 5th of April will be an very interesting day to me. The link above shows you the outside of the Tuschinski theatre so you can sort of imagine what the inside might be like. This will be quite some happening!

Sorry that you have to wait for some time more, but "Beyond the Rocks" will show up at the American shores!

Hope this helps, and wets appetites!
Best Regards
