It's booked into The Tampa Theatre, a fully (and magnificently) restored, 1926-built, "atmospheric" that is this city's #1 art house.
...one show only: Sunday, February 26th at 3:00pm.
The Tampa Theatre is the only house in the city capable of screening this film-- it's going to be accompanied by the legendary Rosa Rio on the theatre's 1,200-pipe Wurlitzer. An event not to be missed.
Since January 6th, The Tampa Theatre has been the Tampa Bay area's exclusive venue for "Brokeback Mountain."
They have had a few odd weekend matinee shows, such as having Carol Channing appear and introduce "Thoroughly Modern Millie."
I missed that one-- I love Carol, but dislike that film...
On February 12th we'll be treated to the new anaglyph 3-D print of 1954's "Creature From The Black Lagoon," a film I've not seen (in 3-D) since I caught it at a NYC repertoire house in the late 1960's....
In the meantime, "Brokeback Mountain" has been packing them in-- and the theatre announced (over a week ago) that they were holding it over "due to popular demand" (their words). I've seen it several times-- each time with different friends-- but they all, both men & women, have the same reaction.... a feeling of having been witness to an artistic cinema masterpiece, and --at the same time-- a feeling of having been drawn right into the story-- as if there was no film, no actors, --just Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist-- and the tragic love story on the mountain. I've yet to sit through a showing of this film where I didn't witness applause at it's finish....and so many people wiping away tears....
I'm going again tonight, BTW-- this time with two co-workers.
If you think I'm spending a lot of money on tickets-- you're half right.
--I would if I had to-- this film is worth it. However, I have a membership card that acts as a pass. (The Tampa Theatre offers several levels of annual membership-- from $35.00 a year to $500.00 a year-- money they use to maintain the theatre in it's fabulously restored condition).
I have a $100 ('Mogul'-level) annual membership. It gets me into all films without having to buy a ticket, --nor wait on any lines-- something I VERY MUCH appreciated when "Brokeback" first opened, and the lines were always two blocks long!
In any case, I'm looking forward to "Beyond The Rocks," --and I'm especially appreciative of my chance to see it in a restored movie palace such as this one-- rather than just waiting for the home video disc....
I hope to post here after seeing it.....
