Subtle and restrained.

Watching a never-before seen Silent has me examining the special acting style they had to use then. The acting in this one is not overdone, no exaggerated gestures, etc. They really did use their faces, as Gloria Swanson said in "Sunset Boulevard". How much here is the skill of the principals or the director is hard to say; they all seem to know what they're doing. The snowy Alpine set is excellent. Swanson's make-up, the lipstick, looks too dark, especially in her early scenes as the younger daughter in a simple family. I think Valentino wears his modern clothes as well as I have ever seen, as well as Cary Grant ever does. He looks terrific. I look forward to watching it again.
