What did you rate 'Beyond the Rocks' (1922)?

I gave this lovely silent romantic drama, starring Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson, a 7.

What did you rate this movie? And what did you think of it?

I really like this movie....I gave it a 10, but it must be argued that I rate movies to high, and give too many 10s. Watching a lot more 'classic' movies, I need to roll onto that page and re-rate 'em I guess.

But as this is one of my all time favorites, I would leave this a 10....

You like this film? Why, xylonian, I am shocked, shocked.

Do you like it as well as Sea Wife with Joan Collins?

"Sea Wife"???? I don't think I would have thought of a comparison between these two, however now that you have brought it up, I see there is a direct relationship....

....as in, the simular plot device of personal sacrifice versus self gratification/happiness which is found in both.

I have often wondered if a movie in today's age could have a simular theme, and plot, and if those characters would be found to be credible to "modern" viewers....

"Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life" was the closest I could come up with....(with a noteworthy bit of finality to the conflict between ethical behavior and self gratification )

Speaking of shocked, shocked, Casablanca is a good movie about self-sacrifice.

(Forgive these uncharacteristically short replies; it will take me a few days to get back into our old groove.)

Well TCM did present this again last night, and am sure many will stop by to comment on this very fine movie.

Just being reintroduced to Gertrude Astor in 'The Cat and the Canary' it is hard to beleive it is the same actress in what might be said to be opposites in the characters she plays.... I was tempted to change my rating which is a ten, but it seems IMDB rejects ratings of 11

Oh, TCM played this again? We're going to be bombarded on this board! Batten down the hatches!

You know, we ought to start some kind of "Watch it!" campaign for Beyond the Rocks. Let's make a goal to get as many IMDb voters to see it and vote for it as for The Dark Knight. Do you think that's realistic?

I don't remember Gertrude Astor very well in The Cat and the Canary. All I remember from that silent film is that I loved the creepy sets and shadowy lighting, but disliked the creaky story. I'm eager to see Bob Hope's version, where the jokes should be a distraction from the overplotted mystery. (I've already seen and loved The Ghost Breakers, which is supposed to be similar.)

"Do you think that's realistic?"

Well....funny you should say that. I must admit I did advertize this on both the Silent Board and a tiny bit on the Classic Movie Board....

Dark Knight-ers will be standing in line to watch this film after a better strategy, however nothing comes to mind....(Its a secret)

You must remember Gertrude Astor in TCATC, she arrived with and stayed with "Aunt Susan" and was one of only two young females, but not only that....she stripped on camera!!!!

I do hear a lot of favorable comments about the Bob Hope version, and the plot of the silent film could have been made a lot better with only a few slight changes....OK a few major changes (like better use of the spooky house).

Have not seen the Ghost Breakers, but did re-watch "The Innocents". With the information I should have gotten from the story if I had read it added, I didn't like it much at all....

Unsure you can capture something that complex on film however, on second thought if you can capture Elinor Glyn's "Beyond The Rocks" with such style as this, one can capture anything....

She stripped on camera! Why do I remember the spooky house, but not that? Speaking of spookiness and stripping, I suddenly remember a 60s/70s comic-horror film where a woman does a ghoulish striptease that included taking off her skin and leaving nothing but the skeleton. It wasn't a gory scene. The effect was accomplished in silhouette with cartoon animation. I'll have to find out what movie that was.

"Why do I remember the spooky house, but not that?"

It was shot from underneath the bed so only the ankles and lower legs were exposed with certain provocative perhaps, garments being slipped down over them....

I was wondering what the audience was thinking...."Howzabout a splice from a better angle!!!!"...."Down In Front!!!!"

"that included taking off her skin and leaving nothing but the skeleton"

I think certain Oil of Olay products shown on tv commercials do something like this....Speaking of which and as you know horror....a question I have been putting off asking on the I Need To Know Board is....

....I saw just a small part of some movie (in color I beleive) on TV so unsure of decade produced, however there seemed to be a middle aged female as part of a group of plotting 'bad' persons....and she goes to her room and applies cold cream or whatever, to her face which....must have been 'doctored up' with acid, as she isn't happy at all with the results. Thats about the only part I can recall, but this scene must have made an impression on (or left its mark on) anyone seeing it and would be memorable....perhaps....

Acid in your cold cream! Ew, that's gotta hurt. But, say, why didn't the acid burn her hands before she applied it to her face?

I asked about that ghoulish striptease on the I Need to Know board. And they told me the name of the movie: Monster Club (1980) with Vincent Price, John Carradine and Donald Pleasence.

Oil of Olay commercials show women removing their skins?

"Oil of Olay commercials show women removing their skins?"

Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention....it seemed the 'prune-women' were so suddenly wrinkle-free I thought more invasive treatments might be involved than just "skin deep"....

I think it may have burned her hands but there was not an instant reaction....I assume the delay was to enhance the enjoyment of of the grizzly types in the audiance....the people as well.

OK maybe I'll ask, I'm so shy though.....

Still haven't had the nerve to ask yet? I checked your profile, and you still haven't posed the question to the I Need to Know board.

I couldn't find the Oil of Olay commercial you were talking about. I checked YouTube and didn't see the prune-women. Prune Women! Good title for a horror movie.

No....and Uh Oh. I have had a relapse of a certain board fever....as you have seen.

Should you ever check the board out, which I do not at all recommend, it takes a long while to figure out who is who, who isn't who, & to have any kind of idea what might be going on....a very odd kind of thing.

Lots of satire posters, idiots and etc.... As a non-political player/etc, I'm sort of the board referee :) Most of what I am saying on that and other boards requires a lot of reading between the lines. What I'm saying ususally isn't what I'm saying, except if I'm saying it to you. I am hoping you noticed this on another board. Lots of good OTs lately which sucked me back in too....

(sigh) OK I'll try to intoduce the cold creme question, one about a submarine movie (in which a US sub commander has to sink the ship his wife is on) and one about survival on a lifeboat, (not 'Lifeboat') in which....to make time, the one in charge of the boat, jettisons survivors who are poets, and others which civilization would consider to be the top of the ladder....as they cannot row as well as some of the 'low-lifes'. A very interesting look at society, and was thinking it might be a grand satire piece. I did google this and have 2 titles it might have been, but they don't look quite right.

I also somewhat promised to introduce a classic movie quiz on the Poilitcs Board....as it would be far too easy for the Classic board. You are of course welcome to take the quiz, and in that am not implying you need 'the easy' quiz....just don't risk getting hooked on the rest of it. :)

Vesele Vianoce!!!! http://www.iarelative.com/czech/xmas/index.html

So the cold cream movie is Arnold (1973)? Cool. See, you never would have known had you not asked.

I might try the Classics quiz on the Politics board if you make one. But I don't think I'll be arguing politics. I take it that the dominant theme of the board is not good manners.

Yes it does seem to fit the memory....sounds like a "black comedy" from the write-up. It took about 15 minutes for an answer, unsure who these people are but I have never seen them to be nasty about anything either....

I have two more to ask, I did find titles that seemed to fit the lifeboat one, but don't know where I put them....

As I didn't want to introduce the quiz on the Classic Movie Board I asked my friend to....so you do not have to visit "the snake pit"....which is a better idea.

"But I don't think I'll be arguing politics."

No, the board doesn't either....it argues over generalities, & persons/etc not actual thought. It used to be better. The other day "a good" thread was.....thoughts on which country, one with a pure capitalist society vs one that was pure communistic, would be more successful. It would have been better if some listened or commented on any of the pro-communist points/etc.

A 5. I've seen Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and The Eagle, and loved them. But this is a stinker - just exploitation, cashing in on star names.

reply

It was a let down but then any long-lost, long desired to be seen film has a lot to live up to. Still, it's one of the lesser star vehicles of either Swanson or Valentino and the ending was very disappointing, these were two young lovers the viewer ultimately may not want to be ultimately united.
