Because the female lead is not at all attractive by modern standards, Agnes Ayres is the object of Valentino's lustful gazes, and she looks forty-odd and is quite bottom-heavy. Nearly a century earlier, someone in Hollywood discovered that if they cast a totally ordinary woman opposite a devastatingly hot man, female audiences would be thrilled and would pay for ticket after ticket.
You'd think Hollywood would use this winning formula more often, especially since quality doesn't matter to the sort of people who saw "Twilight".
