swastika

i was amazed to see a swastika on the blanket he steals while dressing up as a red indian! of course, this was before it was a nazi symbol, but still surprising to notice - anybody else see this?

The swastika was used for thousands of years before the Nazis usurped it, especially in India and Asia. It was also used by many Native American tribes. It became popular in the West as a good-luck symbol starting around the late 19th century. Even though the Nazis adopted it as their symbol in 1920, as other nationalistic German groups had done before them, that probably didn't mean anything to most people outside their small group until the Nazis came to power many years later.

Yep, it was a surprise to see that lil sucker turn up, although I knew of its historical use both by Native Americans and Indian and Asian cultures. Rudyard Kipling used this Hindu good luck symbol at the beginning of his books for 40 years but had it removed in disgust due to the Nazis' actions even though he passed away several years before the war. It is outlawed in Germany and was removed in a lot of places during the war. I know of a building (U. S.) with some carved on it. I do wonder if there was ever a problem showing this film or if it is shown in an altered version in some places such as Germany.

I was amazed to see him wrap himself up in a nice cozy asbestos suit.

By the year 1922, in Europe, the Swastika had already become the ''label' for the German version of Facism - Nazional Sozialistsicher Deutscher Arbeiter Partei. It was well known in Germany.. But I guess that almost no one in the US&A knew anything about that.... (and why should they worry about that. No one could imagine what would happen seven-eight years later.
