Pretty advanced plot for a silent 1920s film

I love 1920s films and I just saw this one last night. Anyway, I was surprise by the advance plot, and the advanced sub-plots, and all of the characters that had a big part in the story. Wasn't this one of the top grossing films of the 1920s?

In the last 3 days I have watched 2 of the great films not only of the silent era but of all time in this and The Passion of Joan of Arc. Absolutely brilliant film.
