Wardrobe Malfunction

In the beginning of the movie, at the chevalier's garden party, on of the girls who swims in the fountain of wine has a little trouble with her dress and emerges with a prounounced nip slip. this seems to be a somewhat common occurance in silent films. i wonder if the editing process was so difficult and unforgiving that many goofs were just left in assuming they wouldnt be noticed.

The truth is that in the silent era the female nipple was not so rare as it became following increased dilligence concerning the Hayes code, from 1934 onward. Indeed, breasts can be seen in quite a number of silent films.

reply

And into the talkie era.

Surprisingly, the first Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire teaming, "Flying Down to Rio," slyly shows a few "Nipple Slips." Watch the plane dance carefully.

"You'll shiver better without that shawl!"

reply

I never got the impression that was a slip. I thought it was an attempt to graphically display the debauchery at the time. And if I remember the scene correctly, I believe Griffith has a cameo as one of the spectators in the foreground. I guess he felt that if a young lady was revealing herself, he had to be in the frame too.

reply

I agree. I never got the impression that was a slip or wardrobe malfunction. after all what's an orgy scene without a nipple or two.

"only one food for the rest of my life? That's easy, cherry-flavored Pez. No question about it."

reply

It was definitely purposeful....perhaps for the European market?...

reply

You are aware about the 'hystrics' about nipples and other 'bad' things in the US movie... business is a rather new one?
You might want to watch a few movies from the '70 till the '90.....

You have obviously never seen the silent version of Ben Hur with the naked man in the galley scene, admittedly back view, but, not even a quick glimpse either!

I am a four eyed evil genius.

reply

Also, the scene of Ben Hur's triumphant entry into Rome, with topless girls scattering flowers in front of his chariot.
