copyright?

Does anyone know if there is still copyright on the story of this film?

I have the same question.

I've found an English translation of the German 'copyright'-law:

http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_urhg/englisch_urhg.html

Section VII is titled 'Duration'.

Article 64:

Copyright expires 70 years after the author’s death.

Article 65, under 2:
Copyright in cinematographic works and works produced in a manner similar to cinematographic works expires 70 years after the death of the last surviving of the following persons: the principle film director, the author of the screenplay, the author of the dialogues, the composer of music specifically composed for use in the cinematographic work in question.

These articles suggest that there still is copyright, because Fritz Lang died in 1976.

Can someone confirm this?

Copyright law differs by country. In the UK, a work is still under copyright until 75 years after the death of the author. But in the US, anything published or presented prior to 1923 is in the public domain, as well as many others whose copyright was never renewed. So, in the US many titles are in the public domain that are still under copyright in the UK and Europe.
