Earl of Dorincourt

What was the white powder he was snorting out of the little silver tin? Was it cocaine? I didn't think so because it's a children's movie but I don't know what else it could be. Please write back if you have any idea. Thanks!

I'm not sure what it was, but I don't think cocaine was illegal at the time of story, so it could be.

That was tobacco that the grandfather was snorting. It was very fashionable to snort tobacco and sneeze. The rich especially carried little boxes called snuff boxes. I collect snuff boxes and many were extraordinary exquisite. They were little works of art. The were made with various mediums. gold and silver were mainly used ,but the very rich had gold snuff boxes done in enamel work and painted in beautiful scenes like Greek mythology etc. They had porcelain snuff boxes that were mainly used at home matching their interior design. Also, the very wealthy had custom made snuff boxes to be made to match their clothes. The lower classes had wood snuff boxes which are very lovely and papier maché done in a black lacquer finish with abaloney inlay. Mainly by the 1870s when this film is suppose to be, not that many people were still carrying snuff boxes and using snuff because it wasn't that fashionable as it was earlier in history.
