Is the KTL-soundtrack version good?

I'm thinking of buying this on DVD and the cheapest version is the KTL soundtrack version. I quite like a bit of drone so I'm curious: is this version good? Does the soundtrack work well with creating an eerie atmosphere or is it off-putting?

reply

also extra question, as it seems people seem to be pretty hit and miss with some soundtracks used for the film. Which is the version I should stay away from watching and the version I should watch?

reply

I just watched this on Archive.org and I'm assuming it was the KTL soundtrack though I saw no mention of it. I thought it was good at the beginning and at the end but the constant drone really got irritating. Definitely works well at setting an ominous tone, but that really wore off when the same tone is set for flashbacks of more peaceful times!

Just my opinion!

Not just your opinion. Mine too.

I thought it was very good. With silent films I don't like distracting soundtracks that force a mood on you. I had the KTL score on quietly and it works great as ambient noise. After a while it starts to ebb from your attention and you may not notice it, but there's still this atmosphere around. Not off-putting at all.

I'll have to give it a go then, thanks guys. I quite like KTL so I was hoping that the drones would add to the eerie atmosphere. Apologies for such a late post!

I've only seen it with the KTL score and while I did think it worked, I couldn't help but feeling it was anachronistic at times. I swear when it first started I thought it was more suited to a film like Se7en and it made me think of Nine Inch Nails. Just this dark, eerie atmosphere that pervades everything and almost feels "dirty" in a way. I don't think it's something that would have been produced in the 1920s (but then I'm no music major), but the dark ambience worked well with the film and I was genuinely unnerved in some scenes. So I guess you'd call that successful. Now that I have seen it in this form I doubt I can watch it with an orchestral score. It would completely alter my perception, I imagine.

Flawless. Just don't put it too loud.
