What actually happens at the end of the movie?

Does he go in to visit with "John" again, or does he start dating/courting the mother? And, why does the policeman have to drag him over there like he was being arrested for? *confused*

It's kind of an open ending, you can draw your own conclusions.

I think that the only reason the policeman drags him over there, is for the movie suspense. The viewer is led to believe that Chaplin is in trouble again, and then he is relieved to see the happy ending. Just a theory.
