IMDB top 250

Does anyone have a clear explanation on how IMDB's top 250 works? Like what does a film have to do to make it on? I ask this because The Kid has an 8.1 rating which should clearly put it into the top 250, but somehow it is not (8.1 should put it between 90 and 113). If anyone knows how this works, please let me know. Thanks.

The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles is a Bayesian estimate:

weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1250)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.8)

I think R is based only on the top 1000 voters (currently just 7.8)

wouldn't have a clue mate. I presume you'd need to have voted on a few thousand films.

You might be. I wouldn't have a clue.

Maybe if you put this question to IMDB staff in the appropriate message board you'll get a better answer. Come back and let me know if you do.

Define "regular".

I can't imagine they keep a datetime record of every vote cast and only include your votes if you've voted for a film a week.

The Kid might not be on the list because it is not feature-length.

the kid doesn't has enough votes it only has 2000 votes

The Kid just made it's debut.

Last film seen (that I haven't seen before): The Brothers Grimm 8/10

It will be gone tomorrow.

it's gone

Ya, I'd like to figure this whole thing out too. I can't, for the life of me, understand how a movie like 'Groundhog Day' can be at #191 and this isn't even rated.

'Regular' isn't Top 1000. What defines one I'm not sure. Regular voters can make you move no points (with unregulars to on the top list) or more than 1 whole point.

The "hidden" factor in the formula that affects the ratings of every movie is in fact "hidden" and just known by the people who runs this site.
Said that "The Kid" although a great movie doesn't have enough votes in order to make the Top 250.

This movie "Umberto D. (1952)" http://imdb.com/title/tt0045274/ratings has less votes than The Kid, but is still on the top 250!

I wish somone from imdb.com could explain this!
The Kid is one of the best movies ever made IMO.
