I read that Jackie Coogan's father was abusive to his son during filming

Of course there is the famous story where Jackie's father threatened to sell him to an actual workhouse if he didn't cry convincingly enough in the scene where the kid is taken from the tramp. I also read somewhere, can't remember where but I think it was originally from Chaplin's autobiography, that while filming Jackie pulled a prank by hiding from everyone so that he could watch them all freak out from his hiding place. When he was eventually found his dad smacked him around while Charlie Chaplin begged him to stop. Does anyone know anything about this? I know people talk about how Jackie's mom stole from him but it doesn't sound like his dad treated him well either.
