the man upstairs, is he..

Excuse me if I'm asking a question with an obvious answer, but the bearded guy upstairs.. is he supposed to be 'Christ'?.. the long suffering look.. and most of all the crusifiction stance in the cemetary at the end. If so, did I miss some reference where he is supposed to offer some form of salvation to people after the horror of war? I saw (what I took to be) the horsemen in retreat at the end, but I interpreted that as just the end of the war.. peace returned. Was 'the man upstairs' supposed to have done something to send them away?

I see him as a Christ-like figure. He is there to put things into biblical context.
