Use of Mattes


I've never seen a film that used as many mattes to create special image shapes as does this one. They're unusual, inventive, and frequent. It's surprising to see this in such an early feature film (1921). I don't recall seeing this in any of Lubitsch's American films, but I may be drawing a blank. Has anyone seen this technique used in any of Lubitsch's other films, or other German films of that period?
