A great film, is it on DVD?
Why is this not available on DVD? I realize there is a small demand for silent pictures, but some scream for availability for their historical value. Anyone know where I can get this?
shareI recently viewed this in one of my classes, and the professor informed us that it was available on volume one of "Origins of Film." I just checked Amazon.com for it, and it's part of a 3-disc set that is available from a third-party seller for....$999.88. Luckily I can just check it out from my school's media center, but in your case, I'm not quite sure about your options.

I came across it on TCM by accident. What an incredible film. I'm not surprised all American prints were destroyed. We're very lucky the nitrate print survived, hidden for years in fascist Spain, waiting for a brighter day.
I was lucky enough to catch it on tcm, recorded it and put it on dvd.
shareYeah, I think that's the only print left. The quality of it is a bit iffy, but at least it survived.
Also, the print had been edited and mucked around with, so it varies slightly from the original...though I guess we'll never know how.
There is a copy on hand at the Library of Congress, and a few other places--Harvard is one, I think. Access to them is limited of course, but if someone could get ahold of one and make a rip, distribution would, to my knowledge, be legal, as the film is in the public domain.

The surviving print is said to be something like 75% of the original cut. Although the film in its state now is powerful enough as a response to Birth of a Nation.
