Avoid the KINO version. It's horrible.

Recently, On Netflix, they changed the version of Way Down East to the KINO version. It does have a better picture, but the soundtrack is changed and it's horrible. The original version is much better.

I just watched it streaming on Netflix. Not sure if that is the KINO version. It said that it had a pasted-together score from 2008. But even the original scores on silent movies are never very good (usually not chosen by the filmmaker and often having very little to do with the film.) In fact, whatever score is used in "Intolerance" on Netflix is ridiculous. They just pressed "play" on some Beethoven symphony CD and didn't even bother syncing with the film.

Well the version on streaming on Netflix has the KINO logo before the film starts, which wasn't there until recently. The original score was really good. In fact, I always thought of it as one of the best scores ever.

Go to the youtube video below and listen to the first few seconds of the music played. That's the original version, the one that I consider amazing.

I went to the You Tube address you listed. The soundtrack there, and possibly the whole film, is the one presented on DVD by Image Entertainment. There are still copies available at Amazon.com. This is the version that I own and that I show to my Introduction to Drama class as an example of melodrama -- since this film was based on a stage melodrama and melodrama played a large role in American theatre of the 19th and early 20th century.)

It can't have been worse than the Alpha Video version I just watched; the entire score is just some kind of wind instrument playing a few repeated tones no matter what's happening on screen. Nearly put me to sleep.

My Netflix DVD is a Westlake Entertainment 2007 disk. The sound track is really bad, and the picture quality leaves a lot to be desired. The only well lit images are of the ice floes.

Netflix seems to be going with a lot of Westlake products for 1910-1920s classic silents.

Stupid!?! I never called you stupid! To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people!
