Edward Sutherland

Just saw this movie on TMC and noticed an actor named Edward Sutherland in the role of "Bud Lane." Right away I thought I recognized him as I am a long time fan of Louise Brooks and sure enough, this was the same guy she was married to for a couple of years. I knew he was a director but had no idea he had acted before. He was most likely a better director than an actor as he was not too great in this. But interesting casting all around. A slim and fit Wallace Beery and a charming Fatty Arbuckle who actually knew how to handle a horse. Buster Keaton is in there somewhere too as an indian but I could not find him.

Buster is one of the few "Indians" we get to see for more than a couple of seconds during the final battle sequence. It's shortly after Dick Lane dies, around 62:00 into the running time. An Indian leaps down out of a crevice in a boulder, and almost stabs a fallen soldier. Roscoe shoots the knife out of his hand. The Indian starts to make a dash for it, but Roscoe fires again, and the guy takes the bullet, flips into the air, and dies "big." And that's Buster Keaton's cameo!
