Well waddaya know?
I’d recorded this movie via TCM few weeks back and finally got some open time to watch it.
Like batpuller, that ‘cigarette lighter’ looking thing was the first scene to really seize my attention. I rewound, froze and studied the image. I realized that it was actually a metal case containing what might be small corked glass vials and larger metallic thing that looked like it could pass for an older style plunger of a hypodermic syringe.
I decided to name the thing — Syringe Kit — then wisked off to the web and VOILA!

The site containing the original image is for the Indiana Medical History Museum (imhm.com).
Lots of other odd stuff to see there.
UPDATE: Found photos of what looks like the exact item shown in the film. Goes by the name of “Snodgrass/Parke Davis & Co Syringe Medical Kit in Hinged Case Pat. 1885.” These were found during a search through WWI, WWII military medical kit images. The vials, based on the closeup of one label, contained morphine. (However, the fact that the vial is labeled suggests that other substances — quinine for example — may have been included with the kit.)
Unfortunately, these images come from an eBay page. I’ve made copies and will try to post them if possible.
Here’s a link to the Ebay page for anyone in a position to view it before the sale is completed:
