Hi, I am a fan of horror and silent films. I currently own Phantom Of The Opera, Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Metropolis. I am also planning to get FW Murneu's Faust. I've seen Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde available a few times, but Im unsure if its worth getting. Any info to help me with my decision?
Thanks.

that box set crcantley wrote about is quite good.all the movies seem to be stock-no restored versions but ya cant complain about the price. there is also a "sci-fi classics" 50 movie set. they are made by treeline video. also there are some great movie classics you can download at http://www.archive.org/details/feature_films
its free and legal due to the fact all films here are public domain. they have some great old horror/sci-fi.
Barrymore probably gave the best performance of his career here. I have it on one of those ridiculously low-priced boxed sets of old flicks on DVD, which means the film is off some old film and was not restored. I used to see this film on TV, when it ran frequently on some channel in the pre-cable era. Now it is gone from TV, but it lives on in any number of DVD versions. I agree with the poster who said you will have trouble believing the same actor plays both roles. Barrymore is simply amazing, and scary as hell. The next version, in 1931 with Fred March, is an amazing film that has March turning into a distinclty simian Mr. Hyde. The next version, in 1941 with Spcer Tracy, eschews the gruesome monster-face for a more subtle, psychological approach -- that is to say, Tracy puts on some dark makeup and maybe a set of false choppers, but that's about it. Nevertheless, this is also a great movie, with Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman, to boot. There have been dozens of versions since then none of them as satisfactory as these three.
This is definitely worth owning. I didn't get this classic for a dollar, but I also own a DVD combo with Nosferatu and Phantom of the Opera, that a friend bought for me at a check out lane for a dollar.
The OP probably has already got this, but to anyone else asking the same question, yes, if you're into silent movies, this one is great!
I have the version found on the 50 Horror Classics cheapo set. The soundtrack on that one really sucks, but the movie itself is great. Most of the music just doesn't fit emotionally with what's happening on screen. With that set, you get what you pay for.
