KISSING !

What is with all of the kissing ? I don't mean between men and women, but mothers and daughters and sons and daughters. It was sickening overkill and made me turn off the picture after 10 minutes. I put up with Lillian Gish kissing her sister Dorothy in "Orphans of the Storm" perhaps because it was a better film or because they were both young, pretty girls but this was too much. And Dorothy Gish winking was equally annoying. Is this one of Griffiths worst films (that does not star Carol Dempster) ? I just watched Way Out East and enjoyed it as well as Broken Blossoms but this one was terrible. It looked like people posing awkwardly in old home movies, not acting in a film.

It's a shame you gave up on it. Admittedly the acting in this one is a bit over done at times, but I think the frame rate doesn't help. For the majority of the film though I think the acting's fine. If this was restored to a lower speed it would work a lot better.

That said the film has a solid story and is a great war film for it's time. There are few quite shocking scenes in the film too. It's not quite up there with his masterpieces, but it's a good film nonetheless.
