Sherlock Holmes

I was wondering if anyone could tell me (or IMDB) anything about the whereabouts of a copy of this film.

reply

There are no.copies known to exist. It is considered a lost film. Only.the 1922 John Barrymore film is available.

I was fortunate enough to see the restored version of this film last weekend, when it was shown as part of the Mostly Lost festival in Culpeper VA. Very enjoyable, despite some slow stretches, and beautifully restored with original tinting effects. Mr. Gillette comes off quite well. Holmes buffs will quibble about some choices, such as the hint of romance between Holmes and his leading lady, but this aspect of the story does faithfully follow the Gillette stage play. Besides, the 1916 version is considerably better than the 1922 adaptation with John Barrymore. I'm delighted that it survived, against all odds, and can be enjoyed once more!
