Could not watch it because of the fishbowl gag

Near the beginning, Chaplin steps twice in a fishbowl in which there are at least two fishes. His whole foot goes in, and he stands on that foot twice, to go in and out of the window.

It's likely that he smashed the fishes. Call me overly sensitive, but a gag doesn't justify that, not even from Chaplin. I just couldn't watch more of it.

This is not my signature. This is IMDb's automatic translation of my signature.

I'm sure the souls of those fish have forgiven Chaplin for offing them 96 years ago. Hell they're immortalized for all time in a Chaplin film! How cool is that! They probably brag about it everyday.

I have the special supernatural ability to communicate with deceased fishes, and let me tell you they are pretty chill about it. They used to brag about it more but the other fishes in fish heaven found it to be a little overbearing and pretentious after a while. But ask them and boy they will regale you with warm memories of that day. They actually were fine after filming...a studio hand named Buzz LaRue collected them after that scene and put them in a mug of water. Unfortunately an oafish grip named Lucky McAllister backed into the mug and knocked it to the ground, causing the two fishes in question to suffocate before anyone noticed. The fishes considered haunting Mr. McAllister for a moment, but let it go, since their lifespan wasn't to be much longer anyways. Plus, McAllister was a notorious opium addict, so fish-haunting would have not been an effective deterrant to any potential acts of neglect or malice to other fishes in the future; he would have brushed off any such hauntings as a bad opiate effect, or a one-off bad batch from his preferred den at Old Man Ling's in Boyle Heights.

Well I'm glad some people find mocking someone's concerns over hundred year dead goldfish to be funny... because I do too.

That bothered me too. But then I remembered this was a time when people had very little sympathy for animals. Or black people. Or women. It was a glorious time.
