Why 1 point out of 10 ?

Why did so many people give this movie 1 point out of ten?
I can't understand this!

Trolls communities working to refrain movies to get high ratings, in order to help other movies to appear better rated and maybe appear in the top 250. Some movies, when they're about to enter the top 250 (like a Bresson film) get a bunch of bad votes. It's just like that. I don't know about Les Vampires as it is way too old, unknown and a bit dated to get very high ratings (but good enough to get high ratings), but certainly that some people acted together to put this one down. It could be related to Birth of a Nation or Intolerance, and the 1910's top. If it's the case, that's retarded.
Removing all the trolls votes could give this movie a rating over 8 I think.

Hmmm, I doubt there are lot of fanboys that watch silent films, so I don't think it would be a 1910s list thing. Perhaps it was getting too high up on the top Fantasy films list - that category would have a lot of fanboys and trolls.

I can't really tell for anybody else, but I've watched this one on German tv in the 90s as a serial and though it was broadcast late and night and in the summer time, the tv station -to their own amazement- got very good viewing rates. At the time I enjoyed it a lot, it was breathtakingly thrilling. Irma Vep really was a vamp.

What mystifies me is the 2.3 average from my own demographic: females over 45. Ladies, please have another look. This is a riveting, delightful serial. My vote of 10 wasn't enough to bring that miserable average up very high.

I notice that a similar thing has happened to Fantomas also, where there are loads of 1 votes. A shame.

If you don't enjoy real cinema than don't rate it.

I watched this in several episodes and found it more than enjoyable.

reply

I still maintain that 90% of the voters that rate 1 haven't seen the film. When you're about to watch Les Vampires, it's because you know some stuff about what it is frankly, not like catching up something on Fox.

Anon up to their old tricks, eh?

For the record, I only watched Les Vampires due to being on the list of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, which I am most diligently working my way through. I find its inclusion in the first place to be rather dubious, due to it being a serial and not a film proper, but I am a completionist and thus watched it anyways.

I was bored every minute of this outdated 7-hour-long snoozefest. I have no bias against silent films, but just because this is an early work of cinema does not forgive it from being a slowly plodding march of dull cliches. Seeing Irma Vep in form fitting clothing was the only thing even mildly interesting in the whole work.

It was one of the most difficult things I've ever forced myself to watch. At least it's silent, which allowed me to be productive in listening to about 7-8 albums from the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list while Les Vampires caused my eyes to glaze over. I don't vote on serials (because I use my IMDb vote history to keep track of the number of feature films I've seen), but if I did then Les Vampires would certainly get an emphatic 1 from me.

You have a good point about one should not 'have to' watch a film because it is on some list.. But I have to confess, I too am making my way through the 1001 deadly films list. Some I have struggled with I will admit, but it also leads you to find films I would never have heard about. And Les Vampires is well up there in that catagory. I loved this. I was entranced from the end of first episode... I now need to check out Fantomas. So, to those who (rightly)opose blindly list ticking, it is not all in vain - 1001 FTSBYD introduced me to this gem, and it was worth it.

I agree that watching this movie if you find it boring by the 3rd or 4th episode is to punish yourself. But the book itself is a wonderful tool. I have it and that's how I found out about Les Vampires. If you watch the whole movie in one day, it is boring. I've watched it in about 6 days and that's because I've spent most of this week at home with a knee sprain. Otherwise, I probably would have finished by Sunday. I enjoyed it and was impressed especially by Musidora.

Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from.

Hey, it invented those "dull cliches"

black and white movies were better

I understand sitting through a 2-hour long movie you hate, and maybe even a 3-hour long movie you hate if you're dedicated.

But who on earth would sit through SEVEN HOURS of a movie they hated that much?

Wow.

I have watched 7 episodes by now, 3 to go... and I am really bored. However, I'm going to watch those episodes since I also have a list to fill. Sometimes I ask myself the same question... why? I don't know. I also have wasted much more time reading books I don't like. General knowledge or somethig.
BUT I must say, this series is not that good. I have watched dozens of silent films, and this is one of the most boring ones. There are several films older than this that are much better.

Look at how disproportionately females over 45 hated the film. That's totally fake. I've found that weird disparity on at least one other film as well, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. I think what's happening is that someone who wants to have several accounts among the Top 1000 (and thus have greater influence on what films enter the Top 250 list) has taken out several sock puppet accounts and voted 1 on a large number of arbitrarily chosen films. I don't think anyone is particularly interested in driving down the rating of this film or The Testament of Dr. Mabuse—or whatever other films he (or she) is giving low ratings.

I wrote about this issue on the Contributor board: imdb.com/board/bd0000042/nest/164364008. I encourage anyone who sees other obvious signs of voting mischief to write the Help Desk: imdb.com/helpdesk/contact_form.
