I bought a copy of A Fool There Was and watched it for the first time today. Obviously, the original music wasn't included as a soundtrack. Does anyone know how the music accompanied this film? Was there a music score supplied to the theater organist, so he/she would play anything specific?
In 1915 the theater musicians would pretty much wing it, with certain musical codes for certain types of scenes.
Later, Hollywood, for their more prestigious productions, would provide notes for the theaters, that would come along with the film. When Warner Bros decides to buy into the sound system, the idea was, at first, to have the films come with their own music. Only later. That's at least how Sam convinced his brothers.
The music on the copy you have, which is, I assume what I have, is found music, and not very good.
