connection to book...?

So, I know that Gustav Meyrink wrote a book called 'The Golem' that was published in 1915, the same year this movie was released. He also helped write the screenplay for this movie, but it sounds as though the plots are quite different. Is this supposed to be a movie version of that book, or is it just in fact a completely separate story using similar subject matter? I know that the chances that someone will know the answer to this is slim, but I thought I might as well ask. Thanks!
