Was the damage to the film in the Mt Vesuvius scene intentional?

I just think it's so perfectly placed and adds so well to the fiery sense of chaos for it to have been an accident. Anyone know the story behind the damaged film?

I was thinking the same thing. It was jarring and creepy in an effective way. Since the damaged bits did not continue long, I'd say it wasn't intentional but if so that was ballsy and innovative. Filmmakers never really did adopt these methods, so it would still be cutting edge now.
