'Oh dear'...

I'm watching this movie and I cannot get over how much it seems to have inspired the white-slavery story element in 1967's "Thoroughly Modern Millie," especially when one of the female victims end up drugged in order to abduct her.

That one woman who wanders around the city with her suitcase until she finally ends up trapped in "the House" also reminds me of Mary Tyler Moore's character, Miss Dorothy, in TMM. Miss Dorothy is unfamiliar with life in the Real World, so everytime she runs up against a dire plot element like the white slavers, she simply responds with "Oh dear."

Another similarity between the two movies is the fact that a person goes after a kidnapped sister, hatching a plot to defeat the white slavers.

At the beginning of TMM, a newspaper headline reads "INNOCENT YOUNG GIRLS SOLD INTO WHITE SLAVERY" - yep - that pretty much sums up the plot of "Traffic in Human Souls."

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

It's been years since I've seen TMM, so none of this occurred to me after watching TiS. But now that you've mentioned it, yes, there definitely are similarities. Makes one wonder if the writers of TMM were paying a sort of homage to TiS.
