A good place to start for those unfamilar with Pickford

Mary Pickford is somewhat underestimated as an actress because she is chiefly known playing children when she was in her late twenties or even older, something a modern audience is likely to find very bizarre. But in "The New York Hat" she is actually playing someone close to her real age, and this may make it easier to appreciate her acting (instead of thinking, "Why the hell is a thirty year playing a little kid!")

She had an expressive face for sure.

Her cute performance in this literally brought tears to my eyes. It was wonderful, very moving. I'm a relatively brand new fan of Mary, and now I feel like I've missed something marvelous all those years and, therefore, currently trying to watch as many movies of hers as I can.
