landmark film

In the history of film editing this is a landmark film. I believe it holds the distinction of being the first to employ extensive intercutting and fragmentation of scenes, a dramatic departure from the earliest conception of film as theater merely transposed to screen. With this film, DW Griffith showed that you didn't have to show completed action to achieve realism. Dramatic time thus began to replace real time as a criteria for editing decisions.
