I think it's a good example of early silents that were far superior to the vast majority of their contemporaries. Much fewer over-dramatic gesticuations, for example; low-key, yet poignant acting in the both the prologue and the epilogue (the farm family scenes).

His actions and his death had very little to do with each other - I thought it was a rather strained cause-and-effect situation.
