When and where

Will the rest of this film be found. If it truly is the first feature length film, it is the vanguard of the burgeoning movie industry of that time. In my opinion, if a copy does exist, it is imperative that it be disinterred and released.

A search should be conducted for this piece. Who is with me?

In about 1990 the ABC broadcast a documentary, the title of which I have forgotten, which told of a researcher from the NFSA scouring Australia for old films. He discovered many previously unknown films, including a "nudie rudie" from France! Around this time, some previously undiscovered Ned Kelly fragments were discovered on a Melbourne rubbish tip. These have now been preserved and are included in the NFSA box set. The documentary mentioned a long held rumour that somebody in Melbourne had a intact print that he kept in a fridge. The researcher even received a phone call purporting to be this chap but an arranged meeting fell through. The researcher was convinced that the call was genuine.

Perhaps if you contact the ABC or the NFSA they might have more info about this documentary. It is tantalising to think that there might be an intact print out there. I'm sure the NFSA have followed up every lead.

There is one quibble that I have with the NFSA box set. I think that they should have included a fascimile of the programme booklet that was sold to the original audiences. There is a copy held by the NFSA, and I did write to them expressing this opinion when the DVD was first released.

It would appear that they have taken note; the superp DVD box set of "The Sentimental Bloke" includes a fascimile of the original script with Longford's original annotations.
