'Broncho Billy' Gilbert M. Anderson Is The 4th Bandit

Edison Studios camera operator Adam Charles Hayman was NOT one of the train robbing bandits...How could he be? He was the camera operator for the THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY(1903)!

And the Fourth Bandit was "Broncho Billy" Gilbert M. Anderson, not John Manus Dougherty Sr.

The 4 train robbing bandits were:

JUSTUS D. BARNES - The mustachioed Head Bandit who also appears at the end of the film and fires his six-shooter at the camera.

FRANK HANAWAY

JOHN MANUS DOUGHERTY Sr.

GILBERT M. ANDERSON - The Fourth Bandit, who stumbles crossing the creek, accidentally dropping his sack of stolen loot and then picks it up; he also has trouble mounting his white horse as the 3rd bandit waits for him. The Fourth Bandit is the one who falls off his horse when chased by the posse; it was unintended and Anderson improvised to transform this blooper into something believable by waving about his handgun before pretending to be shot dead.

It is hilarious watching 'Broncho Billy' Gilbert M. Anderson initially trying to mount his white horse on the wrong side as the Fourth Bandit.

He barely knew how to ride and his fall was unrehearsed. That is why the last member of the posse stops and shows great concern at Anderson lying there still. This person wasn't acting at that moment but was genuinely concerned for his assistant director/second unit director's personal safety! It wasn't in the synopsis. Anderson improvised to transform his accidental fall and blooper into a believable scene!
