Recommended Films from 1900-1909

Since A TRIP TO THE MOON is the most famous film of the decade I thought this would be a good place to start a thread for recommended films from this decade. I think my favorite one is the very charming A Little Girl Who Did Not Believe in Santa Claus from 1907 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477330/ .

Thanks for the post Harlow, wish I could think of some from that period but I don't know any except for this one and the one you just gave me lol. Great idea for a thread though....it's such a shame the way the only intelligent threads on IMDB get no replies while the ones debating subjective thoughts on whether a movie is "good" or "bad" have 500 replies, usually turning into personal attacks after about the 3rd reply. Oyyyy humanity. Thanks again for the post. :)

The Great Train Robbery (1903) is also a very significant film from that decade.

It's just out of the OP's ten-year span, but the first film version of Frankenstein, made in 1910, is actually pretty well-done and scary. I think it runs something like 14 minutes or thereabouts.

hexedd is right, this is an interesting thread.

Thanks hobnob for the recommendations, I will definitely be seeking those out too. Movies like A Trip to the Moon give me a small shred of hope in humanity and our ability to do amazing and creative things - when we aren't destroying things or killing each other...but I digress lol.

You're quite welcome, hexedd. There are a couple of collections of Melies's films available, not cheap, but they contain lots of his short films, running from 1899-1914.

reply

Thanks for that too. Great idea, I've never sought out his collections before. I will definitely do so!

Check them over carefully on whatever sites you go to. The number of films and specific titles vary between sets, and as I say, the prices can be high. One hefty set runs something like $80 retail, though you can probably find it for less.

reply

Thanks. Yeah I noticed that on Amazon and other sites. The price can vary by literally hundreds of dollars. Definitely a case of "caveat emptor."

reply

Wasn't Caveat Emptor the ruler of the Moon?

reply

Many libraries have dvd collections of early silent films so it's a great way to see the films for nothing and decide if you'd want to buy the sets yourself. My smalltown library has Melies and Edison sets as well as other early film goodies, I'm sure larger city libraries have even more to choose from.

And thank you for a nice post ! I just posted yesterday on IMDb about how disappointing the IMDb message boards are for true film fans, seems like way too many people here just want a place to vent against the world anonymously or pick fights, let off stream, etc. rather than rationally discuss films and their creators. And more than a few are those actually discussing movies are unnecessarily unpleasant as if their opinion or spin is absolute fact with no debate.

There are several early films you can watch on youtube and similar sites.

I think this thread and film are great and since I'm always right if any idiot dares to disagree with me I'll punch him out quick!!!

Just kidding, HarlowMGM. Couldn't resist. Good thoughts and a good thread. Very helpful, too. Thanks!
