the netflix version has a narration that was recorded years later

what the hell? i knew something was wrong right away. what's up with that?

Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!

Just watched it. Was that narrative or just a strange score in the beginning. I couldn't understand what was said.

I saw two different versions on Netflix. One was colorized and had a new soundtrack by a group called "Air." I only watched about two minutes of it but I did hear some garbled speech - for artistic purposes I assume. The black and white version had the dialogue and narration added which is easily heard but . . . I don't know how to describe it. It seemed out of place, definitely.

Does anyone know of a version that is closer to the original experience?

this film, like many old silent films, weren't actually silent like we imagine them or portray them. they often had musicians and narrators that would play and speak during the movie. sometimes they'd even have actors do readings for different characters. we now like to portray this style of silent picture intercut with cards with dialog and plot points written on them. while some did do this, it wasn't the most popular method. this means while any version of this film with narration may sound jarring, it is entirely accurate and preserves the film in a manner which is more reflective how people of the time once experienced it.

That's interesting, thanks.
