Ocasio-Cortez’s mom moved to Florida to escape NYC’s property taxes

The mother of soak-the-rich congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that she was forced to flee the Big Apple and move to Florida because the property taxes were so high.

“I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez told the Daily Mail from her home in Eustis, a town of less than 20,000 in central Florida north of Orlando.

The mother-of-two — who calls herself BOC — said she picked Eustis because a relative already lived there and right before Christmas 2016 she paid $87,000 for an 860-square-foot home on a quiet street that dead-ends at a cemetery.

Her daughter raised eyebrows with her pitch to raise the top marginal tax rate on income earned above $10 million to 70 percent.

She has also gotten behind the so-called Green New Deal, that would see a massive and costly government effort to address climate change the way Franklin D. Roosevelt launched the New Deal to rescue the US economy during the Depression.

Tax the other guy, not me

reply

As much as conservatives hate it, freedom means people get to do things you don't like.

reply

Yup, and Gov. Cuomo is facing the consequences of it -- exodus.

reply

As a life long New Yorker....you DO know that high property taxes predate Cuomo by quite a few years, right? I saw her saying she was paying 10,000 a year and remember paying that.....back in 2003.

They do here in Oregon, too. But the next governor that gives them a hefty raise will be blamed for the exodus of people from this state.

Of course, when it comes to taxes, and governors in this state, all they have to do is say they’re going to raise taxes and Nike starts screaming about how they’re going to move, and the governor cuts them a special deal. Too bad the little guy isn’t special.

reply

Galilguy, you are the model unit of Rupert Murdoch’s NY Post vision of its demographic.

reply

Maybe, but what in the article is untrue?

The Mom is smart. Escape the high taxes for a better living. Lot of Californian's are doing it by going to Texas. Just don't bring the stupid policies where you go, thats why you left them.

reply

Oregon used to be staunchly independent and proud of it. The Californians came up here and now we’re regulated to death, we’re a sanctuary state, and we’re so blue there’s no point in voting Republican because the liberals from California will out-vote you five to one.

All that to say that they’re like locusts. And they just can’t help it — they’ll turn Texas into the vast wasteland they left, and then they’ll move on to the next state.

Nothing, strnts. It’s what’s being implied, in a business as usual tactic of the yellow press, that leads OP to conclude:

Tax the other guy, not me.
that feeds into nyp’s pushing of its readers biases that tends to blur the lines of truth.

In this case they are spoon feeding galiguy his bias that AOC has got to be a hypocrite at heart just like all politicians... see! Her own mother moved to sunny Florida in the twilight of her years to escape crushing taxes in freezing ass New York. See!

They pull the same crap on FDR’s New Deal.

I'm missing what the mother leaving a high property tax area for a lower property tax area (which is smart if you can do it) has to do with the daughter saying people who earn more than 10,000,000/year (which would probably be someone not worried too much about property taxes) would pay a higher income tax rate on the about ABOVE 10,000,000.00.

It's like saying someone who was a proponent of universal health care had a sister who got a disease and moved to another country to get cheaper medication. It may be true, but it's not exactly related.

TJ, what the NYP is shovelling doesn’t have to make a whole lot of sense to be effective. That article wasn’t written for the likes of your critical thinking.

It’s targeted towards people who don’t bother to get informed and serves only to protect those pulling in 10M+ per year, by bashing politicians who want to tax the rich.

Anger the plebe voters and the rich get off the hook.

And in my experience the rich care very much about taxes they pay. It’s what determines votes to many of them. “How will this politician help ME?”

reply

True, but I don't think a 10K tax bill has the same impact on them as it does on you or I.

reply

One would think. Then again, yesterday with my own two eyes, I witnessed a stinking rich woman shed a tear when the waitress informed her that they were out of croissants. I’m not making this up. She actually wept.

reply

now she is a millionaire. go figure.
