Psychedelic Warlord

He was a founder of Cult of the Dead Cow going under the handle "Psychedelic Warlord".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_the_Dead_Cow

In the 1980s the Cult of the Dead Cow organized and maintained a loose collective of affiliated BBSs across the US and Canada. It was during this time that the cDc is credited with coining the term "31337" as an alternative spelling of "Eleet" or "Elite",[5] an expression denoting skill or greatness in a person, place, or thing. Also at that time, future congressman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke was a member of the cDc until, aged 18, he enrolled at Columbia University.[6] Beto O'Rourke was the one to come up with the name "Cult of the Dead Cow" for the hacker group in April 1985[7].

Members of the group have protected O’Rourke’s secret for decades, reluctant to compromise his political viability. Now, in a series of interviews, CDC members have acknowledged O’Rourke as one of their own. In all, more than a dozen members of the group agreed to be named for the first time in a book about the hacking group by this reporter that is scheduled to be published in June by Public Affairs. O’Rourke was interviewed early in his run for the Senate.
_______

O’Rourke’s generation of hackers, and the Cult of the Dead Cow in particular, also thought deeply about how to grab media and public attention for a cause or a laugh. Group members, for instance, tossed raw meat from a Las Vegas stage, distributed an essay called “Sex with Satan” and falsely claimed the ability to hack satellites.
_______

Another t-file from O’Rourke, written when he was 15, is a short and disturbing piece of fiction. “One day, as I was driving home from work, I noticed two children crossing the street. They were happy, happy to be free from their troubles…. This happiness was mine by right. I had earned it in my dreams.

“As I neared the young ones, I put all my weight on my right foot, keeping the accelerator pedal on the floor until I heard the crashing of the two children on the hood, and then the sharp cry of pain from one of the two. I was so fascinated for a moment, that when after I had stopped my vehicle, I just sat in a daze, sweet visions filling my head.”

When Beto publically calls for anybody to hack anybody's technology, you tinkle your bell and let us know.

"Psychedelic Warlord" is also a song (1975) by Hawkwind, a space prog-rock band.

I need a butt-shine,
Right now
You are holy,
Oh, sacred Cow
I thirst for you,
Provide Milk.

Buff my balls,
Love the Cow,
Good fortune for those that do.
Love me, breathe my feet,
The Cow has risen.

Wax my ass,
Scrub my balls.
The Cow has risen,
Provide Milk.

When I clicked on this thread, I thought it was going to be about how this guy was a huge Hawkwind fan. Such a great band!

I only heard them on campus/community radio. Beto would have started high school around 1985, 10 years after that song. Band is still going after 50 years!

BBC Radio still plays occasionally: https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/5a28f8c2-31fb-4047-ae57-c5c326989262

Meanwhile, T-rump "likes to grab women by their pussy" , would love to "bang his daughter" , have extramarital affairs just months after his son is born, etc. and Republicans make no apologies for him.

Let's just put it all in perspective.....

reply

It doesn't matter what republicans think of Beto, it's democrats who decide if he runs for Prez. So far they seem most concerned that's he's a White Guy, which is far worse that "pussy grabber"!

reply

It matters more what the Independents and Undecided think.

Most likely, Republicans will vote for T-rump (or by the looks of it, Pence) and Dems will vote for whichever candidate they have. It's up to each candidate to sway the Independents and the Undecided.

From the reuters article linked to in the Wiki entry:

There is no indication that O’Rourke ever engaged in the edgiest sorts of hacking activity, such as breaking into computers or writing code that enabled others to do so. But his membership in the group could explain his approach to politics better than anything on his resume. His background in hacking circles has repeatedly informed his strategy as he explored and subverted established procedures in technology, the media and government.
All the Democratic candidates and the Obama Administration before them and the Democratic party in general have worked for close to a decade to implement national cybersecurity mechanisms (obstructed by Republicans every step of the way, straight through now, blocking bills to beef up funding for election security) to stop national and international hacking/cyber attacks. Between the Republican party and Democratic party, the latter is the party who will try, once again, to implement as many mechanisms as possible to deal with cyber security attacks and cyberware. I for one trust O'Rourke and all the Democratic candidates and Democratic party to do their best to bolster America's cyber security infrastructure (which they've been trying to do....), not Donald "Russia please hack our systems and release Hillary's emails!" Trump.

reply

Good point. I think Trump's encouraging a foreign power to hack government servers to get at his opponent's emails is a lot more troublesome than some nonsense a candidate wrote as a teenage edge lord.
