Real Nose in Lemony Snickets?

Is he wearing a prosthetic nose in "A Series of Unfortunate Events"? It seems like he has a comically large nose.

It has been confirmed that the Baudelaires are a Jewish family. A prominent nose is a common trait for someone of Jewish or Italian ancestry. I do not know anything about Louis' family background, but I think he's a very good fit for the role of Klaus.

Striderswife that seems sort of stereotypical to me. Do all Asians have slanty eyes and black people all have big wide noses? And the kid is not wearing a prosthetic device to make him look "more Jewish." Sheesh.

I think you're taking what I said the wrong way. My comment was about physical genetic traits, something passed down through bloodlines across the ages. It's 8th grade science. Our genes make us look the way we do, and we get those genes from our family before us. People whose ancestors come from different areas of the world can be distinguished as such. Yes, people of Asian lineage usually have narrow eyes. It's in their DNA. My husband is from German and Austrian background, and he has the "stereotypical" blond hair and blue eyes.

I never said Louis was wearing a prosthesis for the role. Do an image search, and you will see that's what he really looks like. The wearing of the plastic glasses accentuates the lines of his bridge. There is nothing derogatory about these statements. Daniel Handler himself is of Jewish ancestry. I don't know if he was involved in casting, but I do know he was a part of the creation of this series. I think Louis Hynes is a marvelous fit for the role of Klaus.

If I had made insulting remarks about the physical appearances of different heritages, that would have been reason to react the way you did. I would never put a person down on account of his natural looks.

Then I apologize... I understand the concept of genetic traits, but I don't think there is anything going on in this series that they're making a comment on Jews, or the character's even being Jewish. I haven't read the books, but does it come into play? Is it a part of some story line? Does Judaism play a part in the Lemony Snicket series? In any case... I probably over reacted. Sorry.

What a bizarre question. Who cares?

reply

It's a perfectly valid question for someone who is questioning the Make Up and Special effects of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

reply

You can see in some events and photos not related to the series that this was really his nose, he reminds me of a young version of Woody Allen, he's very talented

Neither their heritage nor religion comes in to play in the books. There are little hints, such as a rabbi being mentioned, or common Yiddish phrases from time to time, but it's not a part of the story.

And I accept your gracious apology. It's not often on the internet people respond or reply civilly. I do understand it's all too easy to take typed text the wrong way, as opposed to people having a conversation in person.

I strongly recommend you read the books. They're actually delightful, despite the dark overtone of the story. I'm smitten by Handler's writing style.
