Do you think she's famous?

I talked to a girl about music and she had never heard of her.

reply

IM PRETTY SURE THATS STAN'S DAD.

reply

It is.

She was pretty much a one hit wonder. If you're a musician you have to keep churning out music, she didn't or at least didn't create any that was good enough to get any airplay. I don't even know if she still has a recording contract.

reply

It was a dull song too.

Not sure how one defines a one-hit wonder, but I don't think she qualifies. So far she's released 8 singles that have hit the Billboard Hot 100:

Royals reached #1
Team reached #6
Green Light reached #19
Yellow Flicker Beat reached #34
The other four hit 68, 71, 78, and 92.

Three songs in the top 20, two in the top 10, and 8 overall in the hot 100 seems like more than a one-hit wonder. Merriam-Webster is somewhat vague in their definition, saying only "a performer, group, etc., that is popular or successful only once for a brief time." That can apply to a lot of bands and artists, but I think the key is "only once." Having two top 10 songs, I believe, excuses one from the "one hit wonder" discussion.

reply

I would say Royals is the only hit on that list since it managed to hit number one in more than one country around the world. You just pulled up the US charts and even there she had only 1 number one, team might have cracked the top 10 but that was it. If you want to use charts to determine if someone is a one hit wonder then you can't just pick one country and go with it. The more appropriate way is not even using chart but just asking people what they remember about an artist. I doubt many people would remember anything she did other than Royals. Go look at the UK Charts though since you want to go chasing numbers, Royals was the only one that even made the top 10. If you can't crank out more than 1 number one around the world and are defined by only one song your a one hit wonder.

reply

Well, for starters, it's the American chart that matters. We could pick various other countries and see how she fared in Croatia or Nigeria, but one's success is based on how one does in the U.S. But beyond that, the discussion here has been about whether she is a one hit wonder in the U.S., so that's where I focused.

I question your methodology as well. I don't think an artist needs multiple #1 songs. According to you Guns N' Roses, Abba, and The Police are all one hit wonder bands, at least here in the US. Meanwhile, Bruce Springsteen has never had a single #1 song. Neither did James Brown, or the Backstreet Boys. And over there in the UK, The Who never had a #1 song. How do they rank?

reply

IDK. One hit wonder in the states. Might be famous wherever she's from. Personally, I love her song. But the radio sure don't play it no more.

reply

She's from New Zealand

reply

I wouldn't call her a 1 hit wonder. She's had about 10 singles.

reply

And sold 5 million albums around the world, not bad for someone who has only released 2 so far.

reply

Famous enough to be trending on a MovieChat front page with Jesus Christ and Greta Thunberg

reply

i haven't seen a pic of her in a while but i watched the american version of royals video and her pic in profile i feel she should use less makeup and trying to look hot and look more natural.

I'm not really sure, though two of her songs have been used in cinema in recent years. "Yellow Flicker Beat" was in the credits for "Mockingjay: Part I," and her own cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was used in the trailer for "Dracula Untold." Other than that, I haven't heard much about her.
