Jordan Peterson — what are his credentials in Academia? Pop psychology or well-respected scientist. Lets check the data.

A response to the asshole who called Peterson a "pseudo intellectual". Besides personality research and lecturing he was a clinical psychologist. He has written several books, one is a best seller. Hundreds of hours of lectures online too.

In terms of education Peterson seems to have a relatively impressive track record. He was accepted into, and studied at the University of Alberta and later McGill University, which are considered two of the best/most prestigious universities in Canada (Source: Times Higher Education, IDP, US News.) He also had a 5 year associate professorship at Harvard University Psychology Department before moving to the University of Toronto, where he is currently employed. Harvard University and the University of Toronto are also widely considered two of the top research institutions in the world (Source: Times Higher Education, dailyhive, UofT.)

The h-score essentially gauges your impact on the field of science as a whole. It answers the question: “Have you help move your field forward?”

It depends on field but, Average is ~10, successful is 20, outstanding is 40, 60 is the realm of Nobel Laureates. What is Dr. Peterson’s score? As of 2018 Peterson has an h-index of 51 on Google Scholar.

He’s one of the top 50 most cited clinical psychologists of all time with over 11,000 citations.

I'm just getting familiar with Peterson. He does appear well educated in his field.

When he steps outside his field I haven't decided yet.

Especially when I saw a clip of him stating that people cannot quit smoking unless they undergo a mystical experience, like he claims to have experienced. On shrooms if I remember correctly.

That is patently absurd.

reply

Outside his field is a mixed bag, which isn't surprising. Everybody has pockets of knowledge and a whole tonne of ignorance. That's why Bill Nye the Science Guy inspired millions of kids to be curious about the world and respect STEM subjects, but when he talks about how philosophy isn't necessary and is stupid, he comes off like an ignoramus: because everybody is (on some topics) an ignoramus.

reply

You think Bill Nye is a scientist?

reply

No, but he clearly has knowledge in those areas.

reply

Overrated. I think he has a 100 IQ point, but I understand his people and fans who tell me that I have greatly undermined him given that he has credentials and has garnered respect during his period of work as a college professor. Roll eyes, though.

reply

Um, no. Someone with just a 100 IQ would really struggle with any graduate program, let alone one at elite schools that Peterson attended, and it would be extraordinarily difficult for someone with only a 100 IQ, to not only conduct, but publish a study as a first author in a respected peer-reviewed academic journal. Peterson has done it dozens of times. Not to mention, those Harvard snobs don't hire professors with pedestrian IQs. I would say with confidence that Peterson is in the "very superior" range on the modern WAIS, which is over 130 and the highest obtainable category (they no longer use the "genius" classification).
