When do less attractive men...

... get to play "attractive" good guys in movies? Like Toby Jones - when does he get to be the trustworthy heartthrob instead of the little straightwhitemale creep? When is that sociopolitical movement coming to be? If this bitch is "sexy", then I'm gonna kill it when the time for ugly white dudes rolls around.

Kylo Ren?

Seth Rogan
Benidict Cumberbatch
Micheal Cerra
Jonah Hill
Will Ferrell

All of these have had roles where hot women want them, but in reality they would get skipped over very fast when walking the streets.

reply

I'll give you BC, even though a bunch of women say he's hot, and I take their word for it. As for the others, that's part of the joke. Everyone knows they're not actually that attractive.

Had to look up Kylo. And I would agree, to me, Driver is not an attractive man, but once again, I can only go by the opinions of straight women and gay men that say he is.

So, that brings us to the next point - does anyone genuinely find her attractive, or is it all just a part of the game that folks like my good pal Satan2016 play? The game in which anyone who is a part of whatever group(s) you align with can do no wrong and has no flaws.

reply

I think Kelly Marie is attractive.

reply

Alright. Like I said, I know several people that think both Driver and Cumberbatch are attractive. I guess I just wanted to see how many people genuinely think she's "hot" and "sexy", as opposed to just being caught up in the political/disney/box office wars horseshit.

I really dug the character Rose as well. She did an awesome job. Too bad so many vilified her on social media 2 years ago. I know she was pretty upset. Also too bad that Abrams chickened out and pretty much left her character out this last film.

Same bullshit happened with Ahmed Best and Jar Jar. Ahmed was so bothered by it he almost committed suicide....

reply

Truth be told, I haven't seen any of the films and didn't know the woman existed until she started popping up here. When I saw that my friend Satan2016 was pushing her into trending, I knew there was some ulterior motive, as I've never seen that individual ever give a genuine opinion on anything that is actually about film or television, just the politics surrounding it.

That said, I do plan on diving into SW soon. It's just such an undertaking at this point.

reply

Both have a great deal of sex appeal even though they're not attractive in a conventional sense.

reply

She wasn't playing a "hot girl" role. She was an anonymous grunt in the rebel army. She wasn't a love interest or the object of anyone's affection.

reply

I wasn't saying that she did. This was in response to everyone all of a sudden saying how hot and sexy she is. I was just curious as to the political/social motivations behind declaring such a statement, because I was, at the time, unaware of who she was, let alone the fact that she was in a SW movie and being "harassed and bullied" online. Now I know most of the boring details, and don't really give a fuck. No one cares about her, either way. She's just trying to advance her own career with victim status and everyone else is just using her as a pawn for their agenda. It's 100% about politics, big surprise.

You liked my "49 Hot Pics" thread? I don't think many noticed the article was partially parody. Maybe they just looked at the pictures!

Her parents are refugees from Vietnam, so I don't know if she's attractive by that standard. I don't think she's ugly. Was disappointed when I got to 49 and no bikini shot!

reply

Oh, so it was partially parody? You definitely puzzle me on this one, Satan.

reply

That's movie magic.

Well, I mean...

reply

Yeah, I know, but again, it's almost always for comedic effect. Like, Toby Jones hooks up with Jennifer Connelly in a serious drama, not a rom-com - that doesn't really happen, does it? Though, it seems like it does happen with women. Hmmm, I don't know.

reply

While this happens a lot in comedies, I think that has more to do with the schlub being funny, but the relationship itself doesn't get played for laughs. I'd suggest Hitch as being a good example of this. They make fun of Albert's physique, but his relationship with Allegra is played as genuine and heartwarming. The Holiday has this, too.

The TV Tropes page also lists Boardwalk Empire, Bones, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, 1984 (novel), Atlantis: The Lost Empire, the films of Fatty Arbuckle/Charlie Chaplin, and others.

I don't see what you're seeing. It seems that in general, women in lead roles are played by beautiful women, while men in lead roles run the gamut from attractive to homely. And, it's not always, or even often, that the man is purposely unattractive for the sake of humor. The most recent film I watched, Uncut Gems, starred ugly, old Adam Sandler as a degenerate loser who had the quite attractive Julia Fox in love with him. He broke up with her, insulted her, dumped a smoothie on her head, but she still loved him and even got his name tattooed on her ass to show her devotion. And mind you, this is not an Adam Sandler comedy, this is Serious Film with Oscar Ambitions.

I *rarely* see an unattractive female in a lead romantic role, and when I do, she is rarely paired off with an attractive leading man.

Off the top of my head:

Meryl Streep and anyone she's been in an on screen couple with. Good actress, but...
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Now, she isn't bad at all, but even coming from a straight dude... come on.
Daine Keaton - same as Meryl, minus Woody.
Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp (before he got all... whatever he is now).
Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston.

Just a few that I've noticed throughout the years, and recently.

reply

This may be a matter of your taste? Emma Stone was maybe the prettiest actress in Hollywood for awhile, and she is still quite beautiful. Diane Keaton was very pretty when she was young. Helena Bonham Carter was also very attractive when she was younger, and playing the "attractive female" roles with attractive male actors. I don't recall seeing Streep or Swinton when they were younger, but neither is ugly. I think they are the female counterparts to the Benedict Cumberbatches and Adam Drivers-- not cookie cutter conventional beauty, but interesting in an attractive way beauty. Sissy Spacek comes to mind as another actress like that, Jeff Goldblum is another male version.

That said, I think it's far, far more common to see an out-and-out unattractive male lead, but extremely rare to see an ugly female lead.

reply

Good points. Probably is just a matter of taste. Isn't almost everything?

reply

BOILED DOWN...THIS JUST READS AS YOU THINK THIS WOMAN IS UGLY AND SHOULDNT GET LARGE ROLES.

reply

Not at all. I think some of the best actors are unattractive. The point of this thread was to discern whether people actually thought she was as attractive as I'd been hearing over the past week or if all of the sudden talk of her attractiveness was politically driven. So, I decided to sort of group her in with the list above ⬆️, to see if it was just personal taste, as FB suggested, or if it was mostly politically driven. I have my answer, that I should have just assumed anyway. Thanks.
